travel money ways to spend less

Do you wish you could travel more, but you think you don’t have the money for it? Or maybe, you think traveling abroad is out of your budget? I was one of those people. I always had these dreams of traveling in the future when I had enough money or was in a different life stage. But once I learned these ways to spend less on travel, a whole new world (bad pun intended) was opened up to me.

I learned that you can travel around the world, if you know how to save money on things like hotel bookings and flights, for the same cost as a trip to a nearby state.  So ditch the mentality of you’ll travel later in life and get out and see the world with these tips on how to save money on travel

5 Tips to Spend Less on Travel

1. Use booking.com or hotels.com

I have found both of these websites to have consistently lower prices for hotels than others. Not only that but they have a free rewards plan where if you book 10 nights, you earn one free. Those nights can add up, resulting in you having some free hotel stays! Hotels.com also has some options to reserve and pay later.

2. Hotels still too much? Use VRBO, Homeaway, or Airbnb

These companies have grown so much in last several years that you have so many options in almost any city you can think of all over the globe. I have stayed in some that were less than $100 a fraction of the cost of what some of the nearby hotels would have been. In Maui we stayed right on the beach in a gorgeous condo for not even close to the cost of what a beachside hotel would’ve been.

3. Watch for airfare deals

There are few ways to do this. The first is to use Skyscanner, they compare all flights so that you can find the best price all in one area. They also list last minute flight deals, daily flight deals, and international flight deals. You can also watch a certain flight destination through Skyscanner and be alerted to when it goes on sale.

Orbitz and Expedia are also places I have found good airfare deals.

Another option is to follow a local blog on Instagram, these are becoming much more popular. My local one is called Flights From Home, search in Instagram to try to find one from your location. They will post deals from your city to all over the world. Flights to Europe for under $500, Hawaii under $300. You really can find some amazing flight deals this way.

4. Travelzoo

Travelzoo is something I discovered a few years ago and honestly is the thing I am most excited about! They post all inclusive travel and package travel deals from amazing prices. Things like a week long Ireland trip with flight and hotel included for under $1000! Amazing deals on Hawaii, Europe, Mexico, and so much more. You can sign up for their email list, so you are getting sent the best deals all the time. This one is a game changer for sure. I look forward to receiving their Top 20 Deals each week!

5. Sign up for a Credit Card that gives you points or miles

There are many out there so do your research on what would be the best one for you. We currently have an Amex that gives us miles for Delta flights. If you use your card for things like groceries (always paying it off of course) then you really can add up the points resulting in miles for free flights!
